WHY WE CAPE TOWN:

Cape Town, South Africa is the perfect destination for a little R&R and exploration. Cape Town is simply stunning – beautiful beaches, incredible views, exotic tastes and must-do activities like the iconic Table Mountain. Do be warned that apartheid ended not too long ago (1994) so you will see signs of a city and country just coming out of racist practices just over 30 years ago. More on that here.

Figuring out where to stay was the most challenging part of planning our trip. We couldn’t be anymore happy with our choice of Camps Bay, which is a gorgeous white-sand beach neighborhood with amazing views of the Twelve Apostles mountains. Less than 15 minutes from the city center, this location gave us the beach feel without sacrificing adventure. Other great areas include: V&A Waterfont (we went here for more upscale shopping and fun outdoor dining), Sea Point, City Bowl, Gardens, Bo-Kaap (for culture), Newlands and Constantina.

OUR FAVRITE THINGS TO DO:

Clifton 1st Beach (4 Clifton beaches)
Table Mountain
Kloof Street House (Super hip! I tried Ostrich)
Boulder Beach Penguins
Chapman’s Drive
District 6 Museum + Greenmarket Square
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Wine Tour
The Victoria & Alfred (V&A) Waterfront
Hout Bay Seal Island Boat Ride

A Candid Cost Calculation:

Accommodation – We stayed at the Marley Boutique Hotel & paid extra for a large balcony with a view. If you’re debating – DO IT! There was nothing like watching the sunset over the beach or listening to street performers under the golden-hour light from our private balcony –100% worth it. There was also a jacuzzi on the balcony and enough room to stretch in the morning.

Food – The food in Cape Town was great but nothing is too different than most western cuisines. The most extoic thing I tried was ostrich (then immediately felt guilty after seeing ostriches on a tour the next day 🥴). They do have their classic Bobotie, a South African casserole and the Gatsby sandwich, which we did not eat. I would have to sleep all day if I ate the Gatsby sandwich (google it)!

Transportation – Uber does operate in Cape Town. When not on a tour, we ubered and walked to most places.

Best of the Best – Whatever you do, do not skip Table Mountain. You can go on your own but we made sure it was included in a tour we booked. You will take an aerial cableway up the mountain and have the most incredible views. Make sure to snap photos of yourself and the views once you’re up there 😍

PRO TIPS :

1
Book at least one Multi-Destination tour We used ``Kabura Travel & Tours`` for or first tour. Stops included: Bo-Kaap, Table Mountain, Hout Bay, Duiker Island, Noordhoek Farm Village, Chapman’s Drive, Simons Town, Boulder Beach Penguins & Cape of Good Hope, Old Cape Point Lighthouse and James Beach
2
Make time to Relaxxxxxx There is so much to see in Cape Town! Like most vacations, you won't see everything. You will most likely have a long flight there so do not feel guilty in scheduling a beach day! That is part of the experience ⛵️
3
Wine Not? We loved our Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Wine Tour! It was supposed to be a group but ended up being private, which was awesome! On the way to the wineries, you will see how Cape Town is still very much separated (segregated) between ``White,`` ``Colored,`` and ``Black.`` Yes, they still say ``colored 😳.`` That part is very sad but eye-opening. Leave enough room in your checked luggage to take home a few bottles, available for purchase.
4
Visit Joburg! We didn't have enough time to visit Johannesburg, but it highly recommended. One local told us it isn't as ``separated (segregated) as Cape Town. Let us know how it is if you go!
